Travel Wallet in Japan

-Osaka, ATM Locations-

โœˆ๏ธ ๐Ÿ’ณ

Hi! I'm Liles~

On my previous post I've talked about how to get travel wallet,
this time I will talk about my experience with it in Japan.

Embarking on my first adventure with a travel wallet card in Japan, I couldn't help but feel a tad skeptical about its convenience in a country that traditionally favoured cash transactions.

Little did I know that Japan had undergone a remarkable transformation since 2019,
with electronic payment methods seamlessly integrated into the fabric of daily life,
from convenience stores and cafes to restaurants and shopping stores. What a pleasant surprise!

 โ€‹

As my departure to Japan approached, the age-old question haunted me: should I exchange money in advance or entrust my financial needs to the services of a travel wallet? Being a foreign resident in Korea, applying online for currency exchange through my bank wasn't an option, and with a bustling schedule, I decided to defer the decision until I reached Gimhae Airport.

Having previously exchanged currency at the subway station's MONEY BOX, known for offering slightly better rates than the airport, I was all set to make the switch. However, an unexpected twist awaited me:

With some leftover cash from a previous trip to Japan, I opted to trust travel wallet and withdraw in Osaka.

โ€‹

Kansai Airport Station

โ€‹

Upon arrival at Kansai Airport, my quest for an international ATM proved futile,

prompting me to head to Namba station in search of one.

โ€‹

โ€‹

To my surprise, not all ATMs were transaction fee-free, and fellow bloggers had pointed me in the direction of ใ‚คใ‚ชใƒณ้Š€่กŒ (Aeon Bank ATM) for fee-free transactions, unlike the popular 7/11 ATMs.

Some ATM charge ¥220 per transaction.

However, finding an Aeon Bank ATM in the labyrinthine Namba station turned out to be an adventure in itself. Even armed with Google Maps and Aeon Bank’s locator site, navigating the intricate web of Namba-Osaka train stations was no easy feat for a traveller.

Let me share the two locations of the pink ATMs I discovered in Osaka:

A) Osaka Namba Station

โ˜…
Business hours:
4:45๏ฝž24:45

Beware:
Osaka Namba Station is distinct from Namba Station, and finding the right one can be a puzzle in itself, especially if you're arriving from the airport.

Google maps doesn't teach you exactly where to go. ใ… ใ…
Naver maps should exist in Japan... Haha

Look at the google maps image, complicated, isn’t it?

โ€‹

โ€‹

โ˜…

โ€‹

1)  Navigate the subterranean passages, following signs to Osaka Namba Station or head to ground level and seek exits 27–29.

โ€‹

2) Spot the Kintetsu-Hanshin line entrance.

โ€‹

โ€ปYou must see this entrance

โ€‹

3) Descend to the lowest floor, until the metro entrance gates.

โ€‹

4) Voila! Adjacent to the convenience store, your pink ATM awaits.

โ€‹

โ€‹

Here you are!!

B) Osaka Station

โ€‹

โ€‹

I stumbled upon this ATM on my last day when arrived back from Kyoto, making it surprisingly easy to find.

โ€‹

โ˜…

โ€‹

1) Search for JR line (bridge gates) on the 3rd Floor

โ€‹

โ€‹

2) Walk approximately 20m towards south gate, and there is it!

Last Important Note:

โ€‹

โ€‹

On my last day, I went to do last shopping around Namba area, as usual went to Don Don Quijote (Used most of the left cash), later went to UniqLo and Gu.

On my way to shopping!

However, a plot twist awaited me at the payment counter of Gu that sent a shockwave through my otherwise smooth travel experience. The Travel Wallet app, which had proven to be a reliable companion throughout my journey, decided to play coy at the worst possible moment. As I attempted to finalize my purchase, the app chose this exact moment to misbehave. Initially, I attributed the glitch to a simple connectivity hiccup, assuming the basement location of Gu was causing an interference with the internet. Undeterred, I ascended to the 1st floor, hoping to catch a stronger signal. My goal? To recharge just enough money to settle my bill.

โ€‹

After trying and trying, panic began to set in. Desperate to salvage the situation, searched for those ATM like exchange machines ( I had enough won to exchange).

โ€‹

Nowadays you can find this kind of self currency exchange machines everywhere in Japan. โ€ปPicture taken at Kyoto Fushimi Inari Station.

โ€‹

โ€‹

Eventually, I reluctantly decided to using my Korean card to withdraw cash from the nearest ATM. ใ… ใ…

โ€‹

โ€‹

Uncertain about the remaining balance in my travel wallet account, I took a leap of faith and paid for a few more items without encountering any issues. It was only upon my return to Korea that the Travel Wallet app decided to resume its flawless operation.

โ€‹

Later, I recalled an update for the app the previous day...

โ€‹

Only on the last day, unfortunately, Travel Wallet was a fail!

With some yen still lingering in the travel wallet account, I now find myself waiting for the opportune moment when the yen price rises before making a withdrawal, or to spend the remind in my next trip to Japan.

โ€‹

๊ทธ๋Ÿฐ๋ฐ, ๋งŽ์ด ์˜ค๋ฅผ๊นŒ์š”?...

Conclusion, don’t spend all your cash reserves at Don Don Quijote,

as the Travel Wallet app might choose the most inconvenient time to stage a rebellion.

โ€‹

A reminder that even in the modern world, unexpected quirky app behavior are all part of the journey.
